Lately there has been a nostalgic stream of heavy metal bands that are more and more stretching back to the root of heavy music and just to bring the powerful essence of the 80s into our age. Bands whose members weren’t even born at the time Slayer, Venom, Metallica, Sepultura and Exumer were starting their careers are now getting their fair share and are expanding their fan base throughout the world. The new generation seems to be ever so more interested about what their parents used to listen to back in the day. When it comes to Brazil, the country does not lag behind. The good old school Thrash Metal is truly well represented by bands such as Violator, from the national capital Brasilia, or the powerful Dunkel Reiter from Minas Gerais.

It’s in this nostalgic stream that Bonecrusher was born. The 5-piece invests their energy into music thats sounds like it’s been found at some lost garage back in the 80s. Founded by Gustavo Azazel on bass, Welbert on vocals, Luciano and Tino on the guitars and Guilherme Cosse on the drums, the band releases their first demo: a killer 5-song EP entitled Guerreiro Banger. Guerreiro Banger was produced independently and presents a rather raw and visceral sound that is certainly not recommended for sensitive ears. Through the course of 17 minutes, the 5-piece crushes a Death Metal bravely sung in Portuguese, just like the good old days of Brazilian metal.

As it distinguishes from the heavy Metal made nowadays, it might sound a bit odd at first. But that can be easily justified, given the fact that the current wave of heavy music is completely different from what was made back in the day. Guerreiro Banger, however, has its merits for being an album that pleases those who grew up listening to the very first wave of Brazilian metal. The nostalgic feel is certainly undeniable.

The EP also features important guest appearances such as Tchesko (Pathologic Noise), Nefastus Porphir (In Nomini Belialis) and Arcanum Arma Poten (Dismal Abyss) all from the local metal scene. Another highlight of the EP is the beautiful and nicely designed cover and insert.

Formed by experienced musicians who witnessed the golden age of Heavy Metal in Minas Gerais, Bonecrusher is here to make history. The more you listen to the songs, the more you want to keep them playing. Guerreiro Banger is rather surprising and it does deserve a careful listening over and over again.
